Opportunity Summary

EDC Team Jefferson is seeking five people for participation in our, FREE Business Advisor Training Program, which is based on EDC’s advisor training developed by Douglas Hammel, author of Succeed ™ Graduates will receive a certificate of completion and be able to deliver technical assistance and guidance to small business owners and entrepreneurs throughout Jefferson and Clallam County. This program is part of the EDC’s Recompete Pilot Program (training and deploying 25 advisors over five years). Participants will attend a structured training series designed to equip them with proven methodologies to help local businesses adapt, thrive, and sustain long-term growth.

We connect businesses, nonprofits, local jurisdictions, and community partners to foster collaboration and deliver actionable economic data and business development resources.

Program Overview

Learn to provide one-on-one advising to small business owners and entrepreneurs, using structured problem-solving approaches to help clients build resources, improve efficiency, and address key business challenges. Assist in both seminar and co-advising sessions, analyzing client data and applying the program’s methodologies. And learn how to keep accurate, confidential records of advising sessions and outcomes, and support grant-related activities by tracking advising metrics and preparing related reports.

Business Advisor Training Program Details

  • Format: Seminar series (not a lecture series—active discussion is expected)

  • Sessions:

    • 40 seminar sessions (3 hours each; 120 total hours) over five eight-week sessions

    • 30 sessions (2 hours each; 60 total hours) providing hands-on advising experience with real clients

  • Modules & Content:

    • Building resources and capabilities

    • Maximizing cash flow and productivity

    • Market evaluation and strategic planning

    • Developing systems and exploring financing alternatives

  • Locations & Schedule:

    • Seminar Sessions: Thursdays, 1:00–4:00 PM at the EDC Conference Room (385 Benedict, Port Townsend, WA 98368).

    • Co-Advising: Fridays, 1:00–3:00 PM at the EDC Business Services Office.

  • Learning Objectives & Expected Outcomes:

    • Master a systematic, effective approach to business advising.

    • Develop practical skills in financial analysis, strategic planning, and problem-solving.

    • Earn an Advisor Certificate upon completing 37 out of 40 seminar sessions, a final course summary presentation, and an assessment interview.

Qualifications & Skills

Residency Requirement: Must reside in Jefferson or Clallam County.

  • Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or above, OR a minimum of five years managing a business or nonprofit organization.

  • Technical & Interpersonal Skills:

    • Experience in business advising or mentoring.

    • Proficiency with financial tools (e.g., cash flow spreadsheets, cost analysis, QuickBooks).

    • Strong computer skills (MS Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, CRM systems).

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Experience with program or workshop development and management preferred.

  • A passion for fostering equitable access and sustainable business practices, ideal.
