Spring Mixer “Let’s Talk”: Community Feedback and EDC’s Commitment to Action

On a lovely cloudy spring evening, over 20 Jefferson County community members gathered for the EDC’s Spring Mixer titled “Let’s Talk.” The event was a chance to engage, share ideas, and express hopes for the future of our local economy. We asked attendees to answer four questions anonymously, and the responses we received painted a picture of the participants vision, needs, and priorities.

Key Themes

A Vision for a Thriving Community
Attendees described their ideal Jefferson County as a place where collaboration and inclusivity thrive. They envisioned a strong “buy local” culture, where mutual support across various sectors helps foster a sustainable local economy. Many expressed the need for more full-time, living-wage jobs and greater access to workforce development opportunities. Affordable housing and accessible services were also highlighted as essential components of a thriving community. Additionally, there was a strong desire for a connected, circular economy—one that keeps resources circulating within the local area, reducing waste, and strengthening local resilience.

Measuring Progress: Indicators of Success
Participants identified several key indicators to measure progress toward this vision. These included increased business growth, improved infrastructure, and enhanced community engagement across all demographics. Attendees also pointed to more businesses successfully navigating growth stages, increased school enrollments, and the expansion of year-round economic activities as markers of success. Importantly, they emphasized the need for better data reporting and greater transparency in public communications.

Addressing Gaps: The Impact of the Chamber’s Closure
The closure of the local Chamber of Commerce has left noticeable gaps in the community, particularly in areas like marketing services, business representation, and networking opportunities. Attendees expressed concern about the loss of a central hub for new businesses and visitors, as well as the absence of a unified voice advocating for the local business community. There was a clear call for a structured, strategic approach to business development and community engagement to fill these voids.

Valued Programs and Resources
When asked about the programs and resources they most value, attendees highlighted the importance of small business education, structured networking opportunities, and access to updated contact lists for businesses and nonprofits. They also expressed interest in creating a shared resource network—a communal pool of resources such as event supplies and community art spaces. Equitable access to programs across all regions and continued support for key areas like affordable housing, workforce development, and sustainability initiatives were seen as crucial.

EDC’s Response: Our Commitment to Moving Forward

Hearing directly from the community is vital to ensuring that our work at the EDC is aligned with the needs of Jefferson County. The Spring Mixer provided invaluable insights that will guide us as we refine existing programs and develop new initiatives. We understand the critical nature of fostering collaboration, advocating for local businesses, and addressing gaps in representation and services.

In response to the feedback, we are committed to:

  • Strengthening local networks by creating more opportunities for structured networking and shared learning.

  • Supporting small businesses with targeted education, advising, and access to vital resources.

  • Promoting equity and inclusivity by ensuring programs are accessible to all regions and demographics.

  • Advancing sustainable economic initiatives by expanding our knowledge of, and offering education around, regenerative frameworks, supporting projects that keep resources circulating within the local area and reduce waste, and supporting workforce development.

We are grateful for the active participation of everyone who attended. Your voices help us build a stronger, more resilient community.

We invite you to stay engaged, share your ideas, and continue to collaborate with us as we move forward.
